Back To The Basics: Film Finance & Distribution Workshop: Aug. 21, 2-4 p.m. Workshop Summary: Over the years, the landscape of film financing has changed considerably and continues to be in flux. The ongoing democratization of the means of film production has loosed an avalanche of competition in independent film, making it more difficult for even the most talented filmmakers to stand out. On the other hand, film is attracting a wider range of financing sources than ever, including a large and diverse group of private equity investors (e.g., so-called angels). In this environment of change, many of the old rules no longer apply. While content remains king, it is more critical than ever that filmmakers take a proactive, methodical and business-savvy approach to getting their films financed – be they fictional narratives or nonfiction documentaries, features or shorts, or experimental work. To thrive on the challenges ahead, filmmakers need to transform themselves from creative masterminds and technical mavens into holistic film entrepreneurs who navigate the waters of business and finance as competently and confidently as they tackle the creative and technical side of movie production. (After all, the complex and wonderful process of filmmaking starts and ends with the money.) There is no better place to start than the film business plan, the film entrepreneur's systematic roadmap for success. However, a compelling business plan —even combined with a strong command of the creative, technical, business and financial aspects of filmmaking— is no guarantee of success. Increasingly sophisticated investors demand not just demonstrable expertise but dependable execution. To get a film funded, filmmakers must convince prospective investors that they are savvy, competent entrepreneurs who can be trusted to use the funds sought wisely in steering their film venture from funding to completion and, ultimately, to profitability. On Aug. 19th PVIFF will open their 5th annual festival with the screening of the acclaimed film "Blood Done Sign My Name" featuring Nate Parker, Lela Rechon, Omar Benson Miller, Darrin Henson, Afemo Omilami and more. This event will feature a step & repeat, food, a Q&A, and more. The opening night takes place at the beautiful Woodruff Arts Center in the Rich Theatre. The red carpet opens at 6:30 EST. The PVIFF Closing Night Award Ceremony 2010 will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in the International Tower Ball Room 6:30-10 p.m. The event will feature a light reception, a Red Carpet (Step & Repeat) and a award extravaganza hosted by actors Malik Yoba & Terri Vaughn. This event will feature appearances by Quinton Aaron from the hit film "Blindside," actress Demetria McKinney from "House of Payne," Hosea Chanchez from "The Game," actor and music executive Eric Martinez and many more. Indie filmmakers, screen writers etc. will receive awards for excellence at PVIFF 2010.

Come view the premiere of the new hit comedy "Cornerstore" starring acclaimed actor Roger G. Smith, Judge Mathis,comedian/actor Mike Bonner and more. This film will be featured on Saturday, Aug. 21st at 2:30 p.m. EST at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The production team, actors, actresses etc. will be on site to participate in a Q&A following the screening.
